# Connect an MCP server to Tilt Agent

> Connect an external service to Tilt Agent, authorize access, and manage the connection in Settings or chat.

Connect an external service through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) so Tilt Agent can use that service's tools in your chats. This guide connects Linear with its read-only MCP endpoint.

## Before you start

You need access to **MCP connections** in Tilt and an account with the provider you want to connect. Open **Settings > Connections** to check whether the MCP section is available to you.

Use the provider's public HTTPS MCP server URL. Tilt supports servers that advertise compatible OAuth authorization with PKCE. Localhost servers, private network addresses, and URLs containing credentials, query parameters, or fragments are unsupported. Sign in through the provider's authorization page; keep passwords and API keys out of chat and the URL field.

For this walkthrough, use:

```text theme={null}
https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly
```

[Linear's read-only endpoint](https://linear.app/docs/mcp) exposes tools for reading Linear data. Review the provider's consent page to confirm the account, workspace, and permissions you are authorizing.

## Connect from Settings

1. Open your user menu and select **Settings**.
2. Select **Connections**, then find **MCP connections**.
3. Paste the Linear endpoint into **MCP server URL** and select **Add server**. Tilt discovers the server's authorization requirements.
4. On Linear's authorization page, sign in and review the requested access. Authorize Tilt for the workspace you want to use.
5. After authorization, return to Tilt and check the connection row for **Connected**.

Tilt keeps provider credentials server-side. The connection belongs to your Tilt user account and follows you across organizations. Switching organizations does not change the provider account you authorized or share your connection with other users.

## Connect from chat

You can also ask Tilt Agent to prepare a connection:

```text theme={null}
Connect this MCP server: https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly
```

Tilt Agent discovers the server and presents a confirmation card. Review the server URL, active organization, provider scopes, and Tilt callback hostname. Select **Connect** to begin provider authorization, or **Cancel** to leave the connection unchanged. Discovery alone does not authorize access.

Complete the provider's authorization flow. Tilt then confirms the connection in chat; its tools are available on your next turn. If a confirmation has expired or its context has changed, ask Tilt Agent to prepare a new one.

## Use the connection

After connecting, ask Tilt Agent for an outcome that uses the provider. For example:

```text theme={null}
Find my open Linear issues and summarize which ones need attention this week.
```

The provider's tools and your authorized access determine what Tilt Agent can do. With the Linear read-only endpoint, requests can read data; they cannot create or update Linear issues.

## Reconnect or disconnect

Open **Settings > Connections** and find the server under **MCP connections**.

| Action | What to do |
| - | - |
| Reauthorize a connected server | Select **Reconnect** and complete provider authorization again. |
| Finish authorization | Select **Connect** beside **Authorization required**. |
| Stop using a server | Select **Disconnect**. Tilt removes access for future turns. |

You can also ask Tilt Agent to reconnect or disconnect a server in chat. Review the confirmation card and select the matching action. A request to disconnect prepares a confirmation; Tilt applies it when you select **Disconnect**.

## Resolve a connection problem

| Status or message | Next step |
| - | - |
| **Authorization required** | Select **Connect** and finish signing in with the provider. |
| **Provider approval required** | Ask the provider's administrator to approve Tilt's callback hostname shown in the row, or arrange an approved OAuth client configuration. Then try **Connect** again. |
| **Unsupported** | Confirm that the provider supports OAuth with PKCE. After the provider corrects compatibility, select **Retry discovery**. |
| **Unavailable** | Check the MCP endpoint and the provider's availability. Tilt could not read compatible server metadata. Select **Retry discovery** after correcting the problem. |
| Authorization was not completed | Check the provider's approval and access settings, then connect again. |
| Your session expired | Refresh Tilt and sign in again before retrying. |
